The owner of a Perth steakhouse says he was not expecting to make such a big difference to the economy.
Key points:”I’d heard the comments and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe you’d be making this comment’.”
The owner, Chris Breckenridg, says the comments are ‘very, very offensive’ and he has spoken to the prime minister about it”What do you think, are you going to stand up to him?”
Mr Brecke said he and his family had been struggling for months with the issue of over-priced meat at the Breckens and they were getting increasingly frustrated with the prices of the steaks.
“I was trying to make a profit, but we weren’t making any money at all,” he said.
“When we first came in and tried to get our prices down, we couldn’t get any higher than $20 for a beef steak.”
It was horrible.
It was horrible.
“Mr Brecks said he had not been making any profit for years and was struggling to keep his businesses running.”
We were not making money, so we were going through a tough time, but the only way I could get to the bottom of it was to try and go to the minister,” he told 7.30.”
And so that was what I did, and I got in touch with the minister.
“The minister, at that point, was just a normal, average guy, a very pleasant guy, who was also a chef and a very keen wine drinker.”‘
We’ve got to stand together’The Breckes said they received no support from the minister or his department.
“They said they couldn’t do anything about it, so I thought it would be better to take matters into my own hands,” he added.
“So I went and bought the best steaks in the country, and they’re still out there for me to cook, and so we’ve got the best restaurants in the world.”
That was a great thing for me, and that’s why I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved.
“Mr Brockenidg has since sold the restaurant to his partner, and said he would be interested in becoming a minister.
